Have you seen Sandra Bulllock’s mid 90s flick entitled, The Net? It’s about a woman who virtually lives by herself with no friends and relatives, except for her mother. Once during her daily Web surfing, she stumbled upon a Web site which had a small intriguing mark on its bottom portion. Curiosity got the better of her and she clicked on the symbol.
The marking turned out to be a portal to a criminal group’s dirty laundry. Her unauthorized entry was soon found out, and the villains wasted no time in pursuing her. The first thing that they did was to erase all of her records in every known government database. In other words, every piece of evidence of her existence was eliminated.
The movie made many wary about the danger of entrusting everything to computers. What happened to Bullock in the flick could very well be done to anybody in real life. Of course, that would be very difficult. However, you wouldn’t want to be the first one to be electronically wiped off from the face of the earth, would you?
If you suspect that somebody is tracking you down or is rummaging through various databases for your records, hire a private investigator to track him down. One cannot be too careful in this day and age when everything can be accessed on the Internet.
If you do background checks for a living, then maybe it’s a time to investigate yourself. Try to check if somebody is peeking on your records. Don’t be surprised, too, if there are many who would be asking for your services to try to check if somebody is tracking them down. A private eye could already earn and live comfortably out of this segment of the market.
