Investigate – at the comfort of your own home

As an independent contractor you are free to set your PI work around your personal schedule.

Some private investigators’ sleuthing calls for going out on the field to gather useful information related to their investigative assignments. However, because of the vast information available online, many PIs do their research and investigation at home, especially if their tasks only involve background checks.

First of all, you don’t need to have a university diploma to become a private investigator, although you essentially will need some training. You will need a personal computer with a reliable and high-speed Internet connection, phone, printer and perhaps a fax machine. These will be your chief tools for training and when conducting your investigations. It’s also best to set up a separate room in your house as your office so you won’t get distracted by anyone, especially kids, as private investigation requires focus and attention.

The Net

Have you seen Sandra Bulllock’s mid 90s flick entitled, The Net? It’s about a woman who virtually lives by herself with no friends and relatives, except for her mother. Exceptionally Common

For those of you who have just embarked on a journey towards building a career in private investigation, you might wonder who will your clients be. Would they be just ordinary folks asking you to check on a friend or a relative, or would they be high-profile men and women who want you to investigate somebody whose name appears frequently on the dailies?

I can’ provide a definite answer to that question. Based from experience though, 70% of those who will contract your services are just ordinary men and women who want to know more about certain persons. Some of them may also ask you to look for somebody whom they haven’t seen for a while. This doesn’t mean that you won’t be encountering cases that would whet the appetite of a news reporter.

I remember my 27th client asked me to track a person that he suspects is sleeping with his wife. I was kind of wary in drawing up my report on the investigation, especially since many of the details that I’ve gathered could be interpreted both ways. My client was on the brink of depression, and who knows what he might do to himself or to his wife if my final report would lean towards a conclusion that would show that his partner is indeed cheating on him. Some of the cases that you’ll be handing are depressing. However, it’s also exciting since you’ll be unraveling things that are supposed to be hidden.
