The Indispensability of Online Investigation
Investigating on someone or on something is now almost as easy as running your fingers through the yellow pages. This makes becoming your own private eye even more appealing to a lot more people.
It is common these days for many sleuths to run a home-based private investigation concern. Skipp Porteous, founder of Sherlock Investigation, Inc., disclosed that in his years and years of experience, his job now involves 75% online investigation versus less than 50% about five years ago, and none 10 years ago. The Internet really has become an indispensable tool for private eyes, making online sleuthing a common place for them. How do they sleuth online?
In my previous posts, searching for someone’s profile through social networking sites is a great way to locate someone. But seasoned sleuths suggest that one start with search engines. Search engines are great search tools that return very relevant search results. These days, search engines are continuously updating their search methods making each result for any query more relevant, weeding out pages that will not be useful at all.
For online investigations using search engines, key in his first and last names, along with some identifying features, like location, enclosed in quotation marks. Quotation marks allow for a more targeted search with more specific results. It’s best to search simultaneously over several search engines, since each search engine could return different results. Among the best search engines are Google, Yahoo! and MSN. These search engines can greatly help your online investigation with nothing but the most relevant results.
However, expert online researchers and private investigators do more than just search through conventional means. Online investigations also involve private and public databases that allow them to search with more flexibility and through vast amounts of information not readily available through the search engines. Special private investigation and law-enforcement sites contain Social Security information that are hard to find, and tons of other information that are only available for those willing to pay.
Another free online investigation solution is by searching through blog search engines like Technorati, Icerocket and more. Blogs are gaining more popularity these days with over 75 million indexed by Technorati. Try it out. You might probably find something. Surprisingly, I did. I found some information about a colleague who turned out to be quite an active blogger.
Think you’re up for it? There’s really nothing to it as long as you know where to look. Thanks to technology, online investigations can now be performed effectively.
