How to Investigate Hacking
If your main line of business is over the internet, you should be cautious about the hacking incidents that happen very rampantly. Hacking on a website, or any computer system through the internet follows the same technique as programming hacks.
Every website operator, from the simplest blogger to the e-commerce site owner, should know better than use programs that can easily be pried into by unscrupulous individuals. Here are the tips on how to investigate hacking:
1. Learn all about programming and how it works.
Depending upon what you are protecting, be it a file, a website, or a computer system, you should first have a substantial knowledge about programming or at least how these things work before you can successfully investigate on any hacking instances that could have happened in your system. Without the right knowledge, it might be even impossible to know that you have been hacked all along!
2. Check every layer of your online defense mechanism.
Hacking may happen from anywhere. It can be from the outside going to the inside. And it can even happen the other way around. Hacking is all about devising programs and writing exploits. Know the stages of your website defenses and see how far your hackers had gone. Do the improvements from there.
3. Always monitor your network.
There are a lot of network hacking techniques these days. Network attacks come in the form of network sniffing, TCP/IP protocol hijacking, Ping of Death, and the likes. Securing your website is not all that is needed, to make sure that it is safe from hackers. You should also make sure that the place where your files are located is not accessible from the people sharing your connection.
4. Break into your own network.
You can best investigate about the hacking instance of your website or network by doing it yourself. If you can successfully replicate what the hackers have done, then you could very well determine the root cause of it and make the necessary adjustments for it accordingly. You can then start to build a bigger and better defense system.
These are the four basic steps you can do to investigate hacking incidents. You would then able to perform the right course of action and make your system stronger than before. If you do this, then you will not lose important files, personal information, or worse, income and revenues from deceitful individuals.
