Tips in Performing Surveillance Work as Private Investigator
Whether you are a part-time or full-time private investigator, you surely need to master the art and proper techniques of surveillance. Surveillance is an activity that would surely help you attain and unveil the discreet and still unknown information that may be pertinent to your client’s requirements. Through the years, surveillance has always been regarded as somehow a form of privacy invasion. But as years also went by, people and lawyers have time and again justified the need to do so.
Private investigators are tasked to find and uncover data no matter how hard it is. Thus, surveillance does not require particular and identified time. It is logical and is usually assumed that as a private investigator, it is your duty to find all the means to attain the information you need. Thus, you should always be on the guard.
However, surveillance is hard to do. It should also be done properly, carefully and very discreetly. Often, you would need to make the investigation appear as if it is not happening. That is the essence of private investigation. Here are several ways on how you could do the task of surveillance as an effective and reliable private investigator.
- Choose the right vehicle you would use in doing the surveillance. Mini-vans and other comfortable and spacious vehicles would be advisable so you can always sit back and relax while doing your job. Make sure the glasses are also heavily tinted so that you would not be obvious.
- When chasing a car secretly, make sure to stay on the vehicle’s bumper. Traffic lights can alter the way you are doing your surveillance task. Stay focused when chasing the target car.
- When verifying address, you could simply ask neighbors or check out the mailbox. However, be sure only to peek into the box, not break it, or you will be violating state rules.
- You could easily determine if the place in the address is occupied by a single family or by a number of families by looking at the number of electric meters.
- When tailing someone and that person’s car stops, you could continue past and go to an empty driveway to make it appear as if you own that driveway. However, be sure not to lose sight of the target.
- Take accurate notes of what you see. Be specific on time and addresses.
You do not need to be an ex-police officer to do the task. It would help if you are, but there are also people from other professions that could make good private investigators.
The way you do surveillance and its results would surely make your investigation endeavor more informative, reliable and helpful.
