How to Trace Your Genealogy through Marriage Records Searc

Recently, my husband received a notice that he was due an inheritance from when his mother died several years earlier. However, he needed to prove his ancestry through a marriage records search to do so. This may sound a tad strange to some but it is not that uncommon when family inheritance comes to play.

Tracing Genealogy through Marriage Records

My husband is Native American and that is why he needed to search through the marriage records to prove his family history. His mother had died and was receiving checks through the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

My husband had never been registered with the tribe and therefore was not eligible under tribal law to receive the inheritance money unless he could prove his ancestry and enroll in the tribe. In order to do so, he had to trace his Indian blood. This means he had to search marriage records.

Finding Marriage Records

When you look for marriage records, you need the bride and grooms last name. This is generally easy, as you know your parent’s name. Remember that you will need your mother’s maiden name. You will need to look in the county and state your parents were married. You can do a quick search online. Online databases make looking for this information quick. It should only take you a few minutes at most.

You will also want to look up each person individually. While you will know if your parents remarried, when you start going deeper into the family, it never hurts to check grandparents. I uncovered that my grandmother was married at 13. She got divorced and married my grandfather and never told a soul!

Finding Birth Records

Once you have the marriage records, you will want to look for birth records. When you see their birth records, you can find out information on the parents. The birth records will list the parents’ full names. This will give you a chance to start tracing back the family roots. The birth records will also list the occupation of the parents, which is also fun to look through.

Creating a family tree does not have to be a long tedious project. Long gone are the days of shifting through shoeboxes and newspaper clippings. Anyone can start tracing their roots quickly and easily with nothing more to go on than their parents’ name. They really don’t even need that.

If you have your name, you can start there. Start tracing your genealogy today through marriage records search. It is quick, simple and fun. You never know what you will turn up.

How to Uncover the Truth with a Marriage License Search and the FOIA

Many people meet others online and that leads to unknown factors but that does not have to be the case when you do a marriage license search along with other public records searches. Recently, a friend of mine met this great guy online and wanted to meet him for lunch. I am the skeptical type, so I wanted to check him out before I let her go.

Marriage License Search

Before I let my friend go meet up with some stranger, I wanted to make sure this guy wasn’t married. After all, what is the point of meeting with a guy who has a wife and kids at home? We went online and imputed his name in the marriage license search. It came back with ten names. Neither one matched the city or state. So, we thought we were good on that. The guy hadn’t been married. I was satisfied he had not lied to her about that.

Criminal Background Check

Some people may call me paranoid, but this is my best friend we are talking about and her safety means the world to me. I do not want my friend to go out with some deranged killer. Even if he is not a deranged killer, I do not want to her to go with a criminal period.

On the same website, I clicked over to the criminal records. From there, I entered his first and last name again and clicked search. I had to select which one was him based on his age and where he lived. We discovered he didn’t have anything wrong with him but you never know. This time he didn’t.

Sex Offender List

The easiest thing to search for is sex offenders. Federal law says all sex offenders must be registered. I went online to the national family watchdog registry and typed in his name. Then I selected the state. Thankfully, his name did not come up but if it did, you can bet she would not have gone.

More Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Records

Thanks to FOIA, you may uncover marriage license searches and do it all in the privacy of your own home. You don’t have to hire your own private detective to get the info that you need anymore. You never have to wonder if someone is telling you the truth again because you can check yourself.

How to Find a Marriage License Record

A marriage license record falls under the Freedom of Public Information Act (FOIA), which means you have the right to access the information. However, you have to know how to gain access to that information in order to retrieve it.

Despite popular belief, there is no magical database that has all the records you could imagine in one central location. All records are easily accessed if you know where to look and how to ask for the information. Fill out the right forms and provide the right data, and you will be granted access.

Requesting a Paper Marriage License Record

Many times, you will only need a paper marriage license as proof of marriage. Some companies require a paper marriage license to change the insurance plans or benefits. Military personnel need the paper license to add the spouse to the life insurance policy. Some women need the marriage license to change how their name appears on their driver’s license.

You will need:

  • The Groom’s name
  • The Bride’s Maiden name
  • The County where the wedding took place
  • Certificate Number (helps but not necessary)

In most cases, you will have to send in the information or go in person. However, even if you go in person you are not likely to receive the information the same day. Rarely, are any of these services offered online as a government service.

The county will look up the record and send the information to you via mail. You can request the information be sent by certified mail at an additional charge. You can expect to wait several weeks for the paper marriage license to be sent to you.

Searching for a Marriage License Record Online

Many people do not need a paper license. They are just looking for a marriage record. They want to know if a boyfriend is married and sometimes they are just curious about their own past. They are looking up their own family’s marriage records. In these cases, searching online is much easier.

You will need:

  • Bride Name or Groom Name
  • Age of the person (helps)
  • City (optional)
  • State (optional)

The more you know about the person you are looking up the better. For example, when you look up John Smith you will find many matches because that is a common name. However, if you know that John Smith is 25 and in Brokenarrow, Oklahoma, then you have just narrowed down your search.

Start searching marriage licenses records today. The information is out there and is available to everyone. What used to take hours searching through dusty records now only takes the click of the button.

Do You Need To Find Copies of a Marriage License?

Has someone suddenly showed up on your doorstep claiming to be your spouse’s former – or current – spouse?  How do you find out the truth of the matter?  One of the ways is to locate copies of the marriage license.

Online Searches for Divorce Papers

Marriages, like divorces and births, are public records.  Some much more public than others.  However, if your spouse is secretly married to someone else or even secretly married to you, this information may be harder to dig up.

Which marriage is valid depends almost exclusively on one thing.  Which one took place first?  If you can locate a legally filed of one or both certificates, this will answer all of your questions that don’t deal with what to do next.

Divorce Filed or Not Filed?

However, the date of the marriage can become secondary if the marriage license was never filed.  This may be because the marriage took place in country where the US does not recognize the ceremony, if the person performing it was bogus, or if your “spouse” simply did not file the certificate – possibly out of fear of being caught in bigamy.

Using an online retrieval system that has access to worldwide data can give you much more concrete answers and help you move forward.  We have looked around a lot, and the best and most straightforward way to find the divorce records were on this sight.  Find copies of a marriage license to make sure the papers were filed correctly.  Good luck in your search!

How to Look for Marriage Records Online and Feel Confident in Your Decision to Date Someone

You sit across the table from someone you have never met, and you wonder if they are telling you the whole truth about their last marriage.  Knowing that you can find marriage records online, you don’t need to worry about that.  You can go home and search later.  In the meanwhile, enjoy your date and try to learn some more about the intriguing person sitting with you.

Dishonest Online Dating Is Common–Do Background Checks First
As unfortunate as it is, the proliferation of dating websites has meant that people who are unhappy in their marriages can lie about their situation much more easily.  Both men and women are prone to reporting dishonestly when asked if they remain married.  Even if they have separated, they aren’t legally free to pursue other relationships.  How wonderful that you can now check up on such people before you get in too deeply.

Searching Vital Records
A quick jump online is all it takes to find out if you are being dished a load of malarkey.  When you opt to join an online records search service, you get access to so much information.  From marriage records to criminal records, divorce decrees to legal settlements, it is now possible to access all these public records and put your mind at ease.

The best time to find out that your new friend is lying is before you are deeply involved.  Find out that the person you’re imagining as your new life partner is actually still married, convicted of fraud, or a known sex offender discretely.  With any luck, they are among the many honest people available.  But if not, you can cut things off immediately.

The Best Choice for Marriage Records Online
The very best place to find out everything you want to know about people, including searching for marriage records online, is with a search service.  Look for an honest one that doesn’t pretend to give you information free and then later informs you that you have to pay.  I hope that you will find absolutely nothing, but it will feel very good to know your date is just what they say they are.

Searching for an Important Marriage Certificate? Lookups are Online

When you need a copy of a marriage certificate, lookup services are available online.  There are two basic ways to dig up these records, either through a government website or through a search service.  Each has advantages, and both work, but sometimes one is preferable to the other.

The State’s Vital Records
To find a marriage certificate with the state, you need the following things.

  1. The date of the marriage
  2. The location of the marriage
  3. The full name of the groom
  4. The bride’s maiden name
  5. Identification proving your connection to the document
  6. A credit card to pay the fee.

If you lack any of the first five pieces, the search can be pointless.  Although marriage licenses are considered public documents, many states have heightened concern over privacy and won’t release copies of marriage certificates without proof of relationship.  They may be willing to provide a verbal verification of the marriage though.

You can apply online for the certificate and expect to hear back from the state in short order.  It may take a few weeks to receive a certified copy depending upon the backlog and the priority set by the state.

Search Services for a Marriage Certificate
Search services are much easier when it comes to acquiring this kind of information.  They can use fewer parameters, such as a name and location, without requiring the whole list.  Maiden names, for example, are typically lost fairly quickly from family records.  You will need to do a bit of the work yourself narrowing down a list of potential matches, but the results are just as accurate.

If you lack any of the data that the States request, then a search service is definitely your best bet.  Utilize marriage certificate lookups online for a better chance of finding long lost documents.  You can do it from the comfort of your own home at any time of the day or night.  Isn’t the internet wonderful?

Why there is No Such Thing as a Marriage Certificate Free of Charge

While surfing the internet, especially in search of vital statistics documents, you may have noticed ads that boast “Marriage Certificate Free.”  The fact is that there is no such thing.  You can get verification of the possibility of data existing online, but no service is going to give you the information they paid so much for, free of charge.

False Advertising for Marriage Records?
I for one really resent being led on.  When I enter information in any of these sites that offer free services, I inevitably end up on a page requesting me to pay.  It isn’t that the information isn’t worth paying for.  It is, but I don’t like being told it will be free, and then find out it isn’t.  It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

State Search for Marriage Records
If you want an actual, certified copy of your marriage certificate, you will need to apply either with the state clerk or the county clerk where you were married. Most states have records going back to the early 1900s, reliably, but earlier marriages may appear as well.

For a government-based search, you will need to visit the correct website for your state, apply, provide the groom’s name, the maiden name of the bride, the date of the marriage, and the location.  Some states will request that you explain your relationship to the people on the license and some form of ID.

The Better Way to Look Up Vital Records
Verify a marriage certificate free of hassle, and access all the databases held by all the states around the country.  This way you can search more general parameters and also get access to other public documents like criminal records, divorce records, and legal decrees.

3 Reasons People Search for Marriage Certificates

There are several basic reasons people want to see a marriage certificate; some reasons are more innocent than others.  Your motivation for the search will impact the government’s willingness to assist your mission.

A Lost Marriage Certificate
If you have lost your own certificate the State is happy to help you out.  You will need to contact the specific state and find out if the certificates are kept by the state or county.  The next step is to fill out a request providing the names of both the bride and groom, including the maiden name.  A nominal fee and a letter explaining your need complete the process.  A certified copy will be sent to you shortly.

Genealogy Requires the Maiden Name in the Marriage Record
For those who are searching for their roots, marriage certificates are invaluable.  They not only establish that a marriage actually took place, they provide a time line and a very valuable and often lost maiden name.  The maiden name allows a genealogist to make connections to the frequently lost female side of a family.

Confirmation of Marriage Records
For women dating online, it can be difficult to reliably know if the man across the table from them is married of not.  Unfortunately, in these cases you don’t have as much information as you might like.  This is where an online search service becomes very valuable.

Unlike a formal State based request, you can use an online service without knowing all the details.  They can help you track down your date based on the information you already have.  If you know the current phone number or address, a search service can usually track back and provide additional information, potentially providing information on marriages and divorces.

Even if you aren’t checking up on a date, use a search service for marriage certificate information.  Unless you really need a certified copy of the certificate, an online service can help provide verification of a marriage without all the paperwork.

How to Find Marriage Records without all the Effort

While most vital statistic documents are considered public to some degree, knowing how to find marriage records can take a bit more work.  There are certain restrictions regarding who can see them or request a copy.  Additionally, you need to know where to look and which department to approach.

Where to Search for Marriage Records
Unfortunately, the question of where to search is a state by state issue.  Some states store marriage records in a central location, but many require counties to keep track of all marriages that took place within their boundaries.  To determine where you need to search, you will have to contact the state in question.

It is much easier when the state keeps the records because your workload is reduced.  Fortunately, with the plethora of map sites online you can use a town name to narrow down which county is responsible for the license you desire.  Regardless, you will need to approach the proper location, state clerk, or county clerk office and apply.

Paperwork Involved in Finding Marriage Records
To request a certified copy you will need the name of both parties, including the maiden name of the bride.  You need to know the location of the marriage ceremony and the date.  It is customary to send along an application form and/or a letter explaining your interest and a copy of your government issued identification.

There are serious restrictions in place to prevent casual voyeurism.  To access this data, you will need to be a close relative.  That is usually restricted to children, parents, grandparents, siblings and self or spouse.  There are extenuating circumstances, for example if you are working on a family tree and the marriage is in your extended family, ergo the letter.

If all you need is verification of a marriage taking place, you might do best to utilize one of the search services online.  These services have huge databases available for your perusal.

You can find marriage records information quickly when you don’t need the copy of the marriage certificate.  Plus, you will be able to track down the state and county in a matter of seconds before you start writing every state and county clerk’s office.
