Avoiding Scrupulous Private Investigators

the villainDesperate straits call for desperate measures. When your back’s against the wall, you’ll realize that there’s no price you’re unwilling to pay for the sake of uncovering the truth. It is situations like these that you can’t afford to hire a scrupulous private investigator. If you want an answer at all costs from a PI, here are several things you can do and prepare for.

Ask around
Instead of scanning classifieds sections for private detectives, make discreet inquiries to find out which private investigator firms are willing to help you…regardless of what you’re after.

Look for fly-by-night private detectives
Private eyes such as these are rarely members of any national association for private investigators. They could have a telephone number or an email address for you to contact, but they don’t have any known or registered office for you to visit. All conversations and meetings you have with him are of the cloak-and-dagger variety. It could make you suspicious, but that’s what you get when you don’t want a scrupulous private investigator.

Be Prepared to Pay
Private detectives never come cheap. They charge you by the hour, but their rates do not include miscellaneous expenses they could incur in the course of their investigations. But be ready to spend a lot more if you’re willing or adamant to work with a private investigator somewhat lacking in scruples.

For one thing, private investigators of this ilk will not provide you with a comprehensive or detailed accounting of their expenses. They’ll simply charge you a certain fee and you’ll just have to pay it without any verification that the money was spent indeed on things related to the investigation.

They don’t ask questions
Private investigators of this kind are too smart to ask questions. They wouldn’t care what your intentions are. That way, if something goes wrong, they can say in complete honesty they had been unaware of your intentions and cannot therefore be liable for the consequences.

It’s illegal
Last but not the least, private investigators who aren’t bothered by scruples won’t limit their methods to legitimate ones. Bugging phones, using spyware on computers, and tracking subjects using GPS and bugs are just some of the illegitimate methods they could employ.

Other private investigators could even have accomplices working for the government. They could have contacts in the police department and obtain records by gaining illegal access to the police’s database.

If you’re aware of what they’re doing and you don’t voice any objection, you could be facing criminal charges as well.
